War Pigs! [A-Block]

War Pigs

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been analyzing George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM from a number of different angles. In fact, many would argue that the novel is considered a classic because it works on multiple levels — as a tale of farm creatures staging a revolution, as a parallel for the Russian Revolution and its consequences, and as a parable about power and resistance.

We are going to further our understanding of Orwell’s work by comparing it to another classic that uses animal imagery to express a poignant message. Oh, you’re wondering what classic we’ll be investigating? Well, it’s a classic of the most rockin’ sort.

Today, we’re listening to WAR PIGS by Black Sabbath!

Welcome to Term 3!

Term 3

Welcome to Term 3 of the 2014-2015 school year!

Although the weather has been throwing us some curveballs, we’re going to forge ahead with our plans. For the Freshman English classes, this means diving into an exploration of satire! AP Literature students, you will become buddies with a potentially-insane, undeniably-discontent Danish prince by the name of Hamlet!

With more kooky weather on the horizon, we may be seeing some more days away from class. As such, please refer to the calendars on this site and email me any questions you may have!

SENTENCE AND ITS PARTS [Exam Review]

FRESHMAN CLASSES — next time we meet, we will be taking the Sentence and Its Parts Exam!

To finish our preparation, please take the time to check the work you’ve done in your review packet. The answers to these exercises can be accessed by CLICKING RIGHT HERE (YES THESE WORDS YOU’RE READING RIGHT NOW)!

After you’ve checked your answers, please work with a partner to review any exercises that proved problematic. Once you have clarified any issues regarding the review packet, please look over the notes/homework/exercises we have been working on throughout the unit.

Best of luck!

IRONMAN: Makin’ a Mixtape! [F-Block]

F-Block Mixtape

In the fifteenth chapter of Chris Crutcher’s IRONMAN, Bo finally begins the race for which he’s been training: Yukon Jack’s Eastern Washington Invitational Scabland Triathlon. Although the task before him is daunting, Bo knows that he has prepared to the best of his ability and is supported by his comrades in Nak’s Pack.

In fact, the members of Nak’s Pack are so encouraging that they even make a mixtape for Bo to listen to while he competes in the triathlon. This tape contains an abundance of inspiration, as every member of Nak’s Pack has selected songs that they believe will motivate Bo. Moreover, the group members have also recorded their own messages, offering words of wisdom, positive affirmations, and spiritual reinforcement.

It is in this same positive spirit that we will create our own motivational mixtape!
